Fun with Children and Indoor Container Gardening

Involving our children with indoor container gardening brings more fun to the activity. It provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn and be exposed to a variety of plants. Allowing them to prepare and cultivate plants provides the perfect opportunity for learning. As we teach them to count and plant seeds and take care of them from the beginning to maturity, we actually instill useful disciplines that will be useful in the future. Plus it will eliminate the desire for them to taste the plants and possibly get sick. Such an experience may even convince them more to eat fruits and vegetables, those that they have grown. Indoor container gardening with our kids also gives us the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with them.

Various factors must be considered to ensure a fun and rewarding indoor container gardening experience:

    • In selecting the spot for indoor container gardening, choose the area that has plenty of sunshine. If you are a beginner, you can start small. It will prevent overwhelming your gardening children. Another way to say this is, “we’ll do this like eating an elephant – one bite at a time”. Usually, the best space for container gardening is the patio or balcony. Not only will it make a charming piece of ornament. A well-tended garden provides you with a continuous supply of fresh flowers, herbs, vegetables or fruits.
    •  In choosing the plants to grow, choose those fragrant herbs or textured plants with colorful flowers for they are typically easy to grow. Rosemary, lamb ears, woolly thyme or succulents are perfect choices for starting up an indoor container garden. Other start-up choices include easy-to-grow vegetables as in radishes, leaf lettuce, peas and snap beans. The combination of texture and colors of the plants makes gardening a more appealing and engaging activity particularly among children. For gardening safety, avoid growing poisonous plants especially those that our children may out parts in their mouth. Poisonous indoor plants include foxglove, lily of the valley, monkshood and the rhubarb plant. Also, for beginners, it is advised to choose plants with short growing season. This way, the children can easily see results. You don’t want them to feel like it took til Christmas before the saw any results. Having few weeks to complete a planting cycle will be a delight to the children, being able to see plants grow from seeds to maturity, bearing fruits and flowers at a short period of time.
    • In actual gardening, you must know when to water the plants. Over watering is a common problem in indoor container gardening. Also, make sure that the containers are properly drained. Indoor container gardening is all about the potting mix. A coarse and open-grained potting mix generally makes an ideal choice. Last, when you plant to involve your children in gardening, teach them about gardening safety. Make it a discipline to wash hands before and after gardening, avoid eating or drinking while gardening and always wash fruits and vegetables after picking to lessen the chances of ingesting garden chemicals or soil.

Gardening brings so much fun when enjoyed by everyone. Your happy the children are engaged, learning and having fun. The children are happy because they get to play in the dirt, mix stuff up, and not get in trouble. The ultimate joy is that you are spending quality time together creating something you will enjoy and reflect on many years to com. Sharing the same passion for a hobby will bring closer ties between parents and children. Not only will this activity bring life to any living space, it also adds more color to the whole experience of parenting.
